  • Global Campaign on Military Spending - GCOMS
    Brief description (Purpose or mission of your initiative, what it wants to transform, etc.):

    The Global Campaign on Military Spending (GCOMS) is a year-round international campaign founded in December 2014 and promoted by the International Peace Bureau after the success of the Global Days of Action (GDAMS), that have been an annual occurrence since 2011. The main goal of the campaign is to raise awareness and change the discourse regarding military spending as a means to achieve major reductions of military expenditures all around the world.
    Our growing community intends to impact at the budget decision-making, especially at the national level, so that resources are reallocated to actual human and environmental needs.

    How promoting group is organized and criteria for considering inclusion of new entities in the group:

    The campaign is coordinated from IPB's office in Barcelona, and it's steering group has 27 members from all across the world. GCOMS has over 150 members, mainly peace organizations, but also, and increasingly, social justice and environmental ones. Our criteria is based in shared values regarding peace, nonviolence and social and environmental justice.

    Public actions description and dates for this initiative:

    2 main activities in 2021:
    - Global Days of Action on Military Spending (GDAMS), April 10 to May 17. Our main period of action, when we coordinate efforts to raise public awareness on the huge amount of public money allocated to the military sector and on the necessity to redirect these funds to human needs. It takes place near the U.S. Tax Day and the yearly publication of SIPRI’s data on
    worldwide military expenditure. The campaign organizes and dynamises public awareness activities all around the world, both in the streets and online.

    - IPB World Peace Congress, October 15 to 17, 2021, Barcelona (Spain). Our campaign will organise a workshop within this event, and many members of our campaign will be part of the organization.
